Implementation Guidelines for the Assistants for Students Receiving the Special Education at National Taiwan Normal University

Approved at the Special Education Center Meeting on Sept. 23, 2021

 

The Implementation Guidelines for the Assistants for Students Receiving Special Education at the National Taiwan Normal University (hereinafter referred to as the Guidelines) is hereby formulated in accordance with the Implementation Guidelines for Subsidizing the Counseling of Students with Disabilities at the Universities and Colleges.

 

Purpose: The Guidelines is hereby established to provide the students receiving special education at the University with necessary assistance in life skills and school performance to facilitate their adapting to campus life and to promote independent living abilities.

 

Services provided by the assistants: provide assistance in schooling and life skills, etc. that helps the students receiving an education at the University to study and adapt to campus life. The services are required to meet the needs of students under their respective categories.

 

Application qualifications of students: The University’s students who are identified as students receiving special education (valid for students seeking an undergraduate or higher degree) by the Committee Responsible for Identification and Placement of Gifted and Disabled Students (hereinafter referred to the Committee), with their impairments leading to a real need for assistance in schooling and life skills.

 

Application and Review Procedure:

Fill in and submit the application form: the students receiving special education at the University who are eligible to apply shall fill in “Application Form for Assistant” (Annex 1), specifying the reason for the application, the assistance required and contents (subject to the disability categories) as well as the number of hours applied for. The application form, together with the class schedule, shall be submitted to the Resource Room.

 

First review: the counselor at the Resource Room shall review the applicant’s individualized support plan, the Application Form for the Assistant submitted and class schedule to confirm that the student is indeed in need of special education before submitting the documents for second review.

Second review: the director, researchers of the Special Education Center and counselors of the Resource Room will convene the second review meeting together (relevant professionals, teachers or students of the department may be invited to attend the meeting when necessary) to discuss and review the applicant’s needs, service mode(s) and hours of service. The applicant will be notified of the review results by telephone or email.

Other notes:

  1. Review criteria: evaluate the special needs and priorities according to the students’ individualized support service plans and reasonably allocate the total hours that can be provided by the Resource Room each year.

 

  1. The assistants are mainly students from the University. If external students are recruited, they should submit the assistant training certificate or prove their competence as assistants.

 

  1. The assistant shall be recommended by the applicant or the applicant may consult with the subject teacher, dedicated mentor or teaching assistant of the department to recommend a list of appropriate assistants. The applicants are required to provide their basic information and contact information.

 

Service provided after the examination and approval: after the examination and approval, the assistant can be hired to implement the services and fill in the attendance record sheets, receipts and assistant service record sheet (Annex 2) on time.

Any matters not covered herein shall be subject to the rules of the Special Education Center of the University.

 

The Guidelines has been approved at the Special Education Center meeting before the implementation. The same applies to any amendments.
